In this salon we want to work together on a work by economist and historian Dipesh Chakrabarty: The Climate of History in the Planetary Age. From globe to planet! Indian historian Dipesh Chakrabarty is among the most internationally influential scholars to have addressed the meaning of climate change in recent years. Climate change, he argues, fundamentally challenges our long-held notions of history, modernity, and globalization. In his book, he delves deep into history and philosophy to offer bold reflections on how to shape human thought and life in the future. In particular, he explains that we can only come to a better understanding of both our origins and our future if we are able to view ourselves from two perspectives simultaneously: a global one and a planetary one, the latter intentionally decentering the human being. Only in this way it becomes possible to think in geological time frames as well as to gain an adequate picture of human agency.
