We offer German courses for non-native speakers in cooperation with the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). The courses take place at RUB in Bochum and are aimed at international students and doctoral candidates (regular enrollees and participants in exchange programs).

Courses offered and scope The courses offered include general language, scientific language and technical language courses as well as courses on selected special topics (e.g. regional studies). The current semester offer can be found here. It is possible - if the language level allows it - to participate in up to 2 courses per semester (1 general language course + 1 course of another category).

Registration Registration takes place in 2 steps.

Step 1: In September (for German courses in the winter semester) and March (for German courses in the summer semester) of each year, you will receive an e-mail with information about course offerings and registration. If you are interested, please send us an e-mail by the date indicated in the infomail with your course request(s) and proof of your current language level.

Step 2: Please also register additionally and independently via the course portal of the RUB DaF department. Please note the respective registration times and modalities. After the registration period at the RUB has ended, we will compare our internal applicant list with the applications received at the RUB. If there are more applications than available places, places will be allocated according to the "Selection Criteria (German as a Foreign Language )" (see download area).

Placement You will be asked to submit a language certificate or take a placement test as part of the registration process at RUB. A detailed description of the registration steps can be found here.

Course completion You will be certified as having successfully completed 3 compulsory parts of the course during the semester, each with a grade of at least 4.0, and your absences do not exceed 2 course units/semester. Certificates of attendance will be sent to you directly from RUB.

Costs in case of failing or dropping the course Please understand that in case of failing or dropping the course we will charge you the costs incurred by UW/H of 40€ per SWS.

A contingent of places is reserved for UW/H students in courses at the Center for Foreign Language Education (ZFA) at Ruhr University Bochum. A total of 30 places are available. When allocating places, priority will be given to students who are planning to study abroad.

For organizational reasons, emails MUST be sent from your official UW/H mail account (Vorname.Name@uni-wh.de). Emails from private or other email senders will not be accepted for the UW/H contingent. Please be sure to follow the instructions there to register!

Here you can also see for which day and time the desired course is scheduled. Please also consider your obligations during the semester when making your selection!

Multiple requests may be indicated, and the final selection will depend on the availability of places in each course.

For some courses the placement test is obligatory! You can only apply for the course level determined by the placement test. Dates and registration procedures for the placement tests can be found here: http://www.zfa.rub.de/lehre/einstufung/termineeinstufungen.html.de.

Each UW/H student can only take one course place from the UW/H contingent. (It is possible to attend additional courses, but you will be required to pay for them.) During the first class session, you will confirm your course attendance to the instructor, otherwise your place will be forfeited. At the end of the semester/course, you must register online for a final exam.

If you do not show up for the final exam, if you do not pass the final exam, or if you drop out of the course, we will be required to charge you the costs incurred by UW/H of 120 euros per seat.

The language certificates will be sent to you personally electronically by the RUB after the end of the course or after the last exam.

Information on registration deadlines will be sent to UW/H students by circular email.
