Open Access (OA) publishing
The University of Witten/Herdecke is one of the DEAL institutions in Germany.
The DEAL project has enabled new contract models nationwide with the three major scientific publishers Elsevier, Springer Nature and Wiley. These contracts give universities, among other things, permanent access to all electronic journals (e-journals) of the respective provider. In addition, authors of the participating institutions receive the right to publish their latest research results directly and permanently under an open access license with the respective publisher.

FAQs on the topic of "Predatory publishing" from the Helmholtz Center
When submitting your article, it is recommended that you choose the CC-BY license if possible. This license is in line with the Berlin Open Access Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, the Budapest Open Access Initiative and the FAIR principles. Funding organizations such as the DFG also support the use of open licenses in science.
The use of licenses with the NC (Non Commercial) attribute - such as CC-BY-NC - is discouraged, as they are considered too restrictive and can hinder the free reuse of scientific work. The distinction between commercial and non-commercial use is often blurred, which is why NC licenses often fail to fulfill their intended purpose in practice.
