UW/H research data management
The Research Data Management (FDM) service and contact point at Witten/Herdecke University provides information, advice and comprehensive support for researchers in research data management. The FDM offers a complete service: starting with the generation of research data, good data organization and documentation, individual advice on all questions regarding the handling of research data and the publication of research data.

What is research data?
"Research data are (...) data that are generated in the course of a scientific project, e.g. through source research, experiments, measurements, surveys or interviews." (DFG 2009)
Research data management (RDM) encompasses all methods and procedures that contribute to the long-term use of this data. This includes, for example, the generation, processing, enrichment, publication and archiving of data.
Anchoring RDM as a key competence in everyday research plays an important role at the UW/H. Research at our university is carried out to international standards; this claim is made even more visible through the management of research data. The RDM is based on the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable). In order to promote these principles in Witten, the corresponding structures are being established (e.g. roadmap, milestones).
The research data working group of the "Digital Information" priority initiative of the Alliance of German Science Organizations provides a good introduction to the topic.
Support from UW/H scientists
If you manage research data well, you have more time for your own research!
The Contact and Service Center for Research Data Management at Witten/Herdecke University provides information and advice on all aspects of handling research data - from generation to publication. It answers questions about handling research data, administration and cooperative use, legal challenges and publication. Support is available in the following areas in particular:
- local RDM
- Use of research data repositories
- Writing data management plans (with various tools)
- Publications of research data
Further information can be found on the subpage Exchange and support for UW/H researchers.
Added value of research data management for Witten/Herdecke University
Work processes are controlled centrally and local solutions are found. Subject-specific, methodological quality criteria are taken into account. The research data management work at UW/H therefore not only supports researchers, it also helps to increase the efficiency and quality of research work.
Why should scientists concern themselves with research data management?
- Funding organizations such as the DFG expect a statement on the handling of your research data when submitting a proposal.
Fact sheet Information infrastructures for research data (as of September 2019)
Guidelines for proposal submission, project proposals (as of April 2020) - Publishers and journals often require the research data on which your publication is based to be made available. Many of these journals, especially open access journals, very often promote the possible reuse of the data.
