Info evening "Parking around the university"

Time
Location Mainbuilding, Audimax, Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße 50, 58455 Witten
Organizer Stadt Witten

The city of Witten invites all interested parties to an information evening on the parking situation at Witten/Herdecke University. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the event hall of the Wood Building of Witten/Herdecke University, Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße 50. Pre-registration is not required.

After an introduction by city planning officer Stefan Rommelfanger, the commissioned expert office will present the results of the parking space survey and the current planning status. Citizens will then have the opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions. The aim is to work together to find the best possible solution for the parking situation around the university.

At the end of the event, wishes and comments can also be submitted in writing using index cards.

Online participation starts on May 11

In addition to the information evening, the city of Witten is also offering a digital participation option. From May 11 to 29, citizens can submit comments, wishes and suggestions online and even pinpoint them on a map.

In addition, general comments can be sent by email to parkenuni@spam protectstadt-witten.de.

Background: Why is the city concerned about this issue?

With the opening of the parking garage in Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße, free parking there has been discontinued since October 1, 2021. Since then, many students and employees of the university have increasingly switched to the surrounding residential areas.

The resulting parking problems are increasingly causing resentment among residents and businesses. Politicians and the city administration have therefore been working on possible solutions for some time.

In the fall of 2025, the city council commissioned an expert office to analyze the situation. Initial solutions were presented to the Mobility and Transport Committee on February 9, 2026.

Possible measures at a glance

The proposals presented so far include

  • the establishment of two resident parking zones to the north and south of Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße
  • the increased introduction of short-term parking spaces in public areas

A decision on the future regulation could be made on August 31, 2026. Implementation would then be possible in fall 2026.

FAQ and further information online

As the topic is complex, the city of Witten has compiled extensive questions and answers. Among other things, it explains

  • why a paid parking garage was built
  • why free parking has been abolished
  • why residents' parking zones are being proposed as a possible solution

The information and FAQs can also be found on the website of the city of Witten under the keyword "Parking Uni".
