The gut microbiome, a complex ecosystem of microorganisms, significantly influences various body systems, including the complex interface between the microbiome, gut, brain and immune system. This talk will introduce the two-way communication pathways within this axis, which include nerve, hormonal and immune signaling. We will explore how dietary habits can temporarily or significantly alter the composition of the microbiome. The influence of a varied diet, healthy fats and the potential roles of prebiotics and psychobiotics will be discussed. The lecture will highlight current research findings and their connection to mental health and functional gastrointestinal disorders.
Participants can expect a guest lecture by Leigh A. Frame, PhD, MHS, Executive Director, Office of Integrative Medicine and Health, Associate Professor, Clinical Research and Leadership/Physician Assistant Studies, George Washington University (GW), School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Physician Assistant Studies.
