We hear a lot in the media—tighter immigration policies, reducing the “numbers.” But what is the actual situation like at Europe’s external borders?
The situation in Calais, France, has changed significantly since the official clearance of the large refugee camp, also known as the “Calais Jungle,” in October 2016. However, it is still characterized by a precarious humanitarian situation. There is no longer a large central camp. Instead, the authorities are pursuing a policy of "zero tolerance" to prevent the formation of new permanent camps.
The Stufu seminar "Becoming a Global Witness in Calais" by Prof. Dr. Kazuma Matoba has been taking place for five years, in which many students have volunteered and conducted research for the refugees. Now a group of these students is reporting on the situation of the refugee crisis in Europe and their experiences as "witnesses".
