On September 4, 2022, Professor Dr. Reiner Labitzke passed away in Schwerte at the age of 83. He was a specialist in general, visceral and trauma surgery. From 1982 to 2004 he was head of surgery at the former Evangelisches Krankenhaus Schwerte and since 1985 he had been a dedicated chair of surgery at our then Faculty of Medicine, i.e. a "man of the first hours" of our university. Until his retirement, which began in May 2004, Professor Labitzke was a tireless and passionate teacher with a focus on practical training of students and a curious researcher in his field. Thus, he was scientifically innovative, especially in the field of trauma surgery; he received numerous patents and awards. Internationally, he enjoyed a high reputation and operated in various countries. Even in retirement, he did not lose his interest in the development of the UW/H. He remained closely connected to the faculty and the department. The Department of Human Medicine will cherish Professor Labitzke's memory.
Our silent greetings go to his family and friends.
Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Wirth
