PD Dan O'Day, MD, is the most expert physician in Germany practicing surgical reconstruction after female genital mutilation. This includes, depending on the severity of the circumcision, the reopening and the reshaping of the vulva. Furthermore, Dr. O'Dey has developed a complex methodology for reconstructing the clitoris: "necrotizing and molding of the clitoral stump" (NMCS), which can be used to restore the clitoral sensation that circumcision is intended to deprive women of.
FGM/C is a serious assault and a violation of the human right to bodily integrity with profound consequences for those affected's physical and mental health. Reconstruction cannot undo it, but it has a tremendous impact on women's physical and psychological health, making it an essential tool in the fight against FGM/C.
The lecture will focus on the medical care of those affected and on Dr. O'Dey's surgical methodology. However, the course is not only aimed at medical professionals but is open to all, as the topic is not only of medical but also of social relevance. After the lecture, there will be time for questions. The event will be hybrid. It is optional to have been to the previous semester's events to come to this lecture.
