The roadmaps for decarbonizing our economies have been in place for many years. There is a broad consensus on the most important levers in all sectors. These are 1) energy savings, 2) electrification, 3) generation of energy from renewable sources, 4) use of low-carbon feedstocks in the form of hydrogen and bioenergy, and finally 5) carbon capture and storage. Indeed, companies have turned to more sustainable practices in recent years; many have made net zero commitments in line with the Paris Agreement. However, following the realization of quick wins, the focus is increasingly shifting to reducing reported greenhouse gas emissions through the use of renewable energy certificates and carbon offsets. While these paper instruments play an important role, efforts must not stop. With this in mind, the following questions arise: Why is the transition in the real world across our five main levers progressing so slowly? What needs to happen to scale the underlying technologies?
The event will be held in English.
