New guideline for diversity of opinion and tolerance

We are experiencing a time of increasing polarization; social debates are hardening, democratic values are under pressure and right-wing extremist movements are gaining influence. In many areas, opinion is pitted against opinion without any real exchange taking place. Yet a democratic society thrives on dialog - on engaging with other perspectives, listening to each other and weighing up arguments on the basis of facts and scientific findings.

As a university, we have a special responsibility: we want to offer space for diversity of opinion and open discussions, but set clear boundaries when scientific rigor, democratic principles or respectful interaction with one another are called into question. This is why the new guideline "Green areas and red lines: a framework for diversity of opinion and tolerance" has been drawn up.

The guideline takes up the current debate on freedom of opinion, freedom of science, teaching and the arts and condenses it into a position that provides orientation for all of us in our daily activities. The aim is to create as much space as possible for the free expression of opinion (green areas) and at the same time to protect this with clear boundaries (red lines).

The central principles of the guideline are

- Academic integrity as the basis for research and teaching

- Social responsibility and promotion of a lively culture of debate

- Protection of freedom of expression while respecting scientific standards

- Clear demarcation against discrimination and hate speech.
