Teaching Day 2025

Two teaching awards for innovative and outstanding teaching - and the big question about the DNA of the UW/H

The big question on Teaching Day was: "What kind of university do we want to be and how do we want to study?" The answers to this question were as diverse as the people who came together on this Thursday. Teachers, students and interested parties discussed, argued, marveled - and celebrated the best ideas for the teaching of the future.

Innovative teaching honored

The teaching awards for innovative and outstanding teaching were presented right at the beginning. Students had submitted 114 nominations - for teachers and also for students who teach. Because at UW/H, the answer to the question of whether this is possible is: Of course!

Ultrasound with tofu and depth

One of this year's prizes went to a very special team: the sonography working group - and therefore to students who teach. And at a level that goes far beyond the usual.

When seconds count, ultrasound can save lives. What sounds like a medical cliché is brought to life by the work of the Sono-AG. The team has developed a well thought-out, practical curriculum - from the first pre-clinical semester to the practical year. With "Sono-meets-POL" units, realistic examinations, tofu puncture training and interprofessional exercises with nursing staff, they prepare around 535 students each year for real challenges.

Clearly structured, technically sound - and human

Junior professor Jan Schürmann-Vengels also received an award. He inspires Master's students of psychology with his seminar "Professional Qualifying Activities II - Outpatient Setting": well-founded, clearly structured and lively. His teaching combines theory with practice, encourages active participation and creates spaces for real learning.

What follows is not a discussion - but a conversation at eye level

Instead of the planned panel discussion, a circle of chairs was spontaneously formed - large, open, direct. Students and lecturers exchanged their perspectives. It became clear that there were many wishes, many points of view.

"I wished for a structure," says one student about his studies. Another replied: "Witten means radical freedom." An honest dialog about teaching formats, examination pressure and learning cultures developed between these poles. The university as a common place that offers space for both structure and freedom.

The university of the future is created by working together

Teaching Day 2025 was more than just an event. It was an open thinking space. Between the award ceremony and the change of perspective, it became clear that UW/H is not a place of rigid teaching, but a laboratory for educational ideas.
