Field time: Action days of the open real laboratory

Time
Location Main entrance of Witten/Herdecke University
Organizer Project Feldversuch

The field time invites interested parties to exercise in the fresh air, practical tasks in the field and insights into the biodiversity-promoting design of agricultural and cultivated landscapes.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate concrete and joint options for action and to awaken the joy of experimentation.

From June 30 to July 6, 2025, the first nationwide open days of the real-world laboratory will take place. Over 50 real-world laboratories in Germany will open their doors to the public - with guided tours, workshops, discussions and hands-on activities. The Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) field trial in Witten is also inviting the public to two interactive events.

The field trial is a transformative real-world laboratory in the Pferdebachtal valley, which is run in cooperation with the Hochschulwerk and the Entwicklungsgesellschaft für ganzheitliche Bildung e.V. (Development Society for Holistic Education). The focus is on the question of how a sustainable food culture can be experienced and shaped in everyday life - with reference to agriculture, health, education and community. Bio-regional supply structures are established, educational formats are tested and new ways of cooperation between science, urban society and practice are developed.

The open real-world laboratory days are coordinated by the Sustainability Real-World Laboratories Network (NRN) and the Society for Transdisciplinary and Participatory Research (GTPF). They show how real-world laboratories, as scientifically supported practical spaces, enable new ways of living and working together.
