Rescue and emergency medical care at sea differs considerably from that on land. In maritime emergencies, initial care, treatment and transportation to a hospital are often delayed. On merchant ships, telemedically guided lay assistance bridges these periods, while medical personnel are present on cruise ships. Cruise ships regularly call at ports, while merchant ships often operate in areas that are difficult to reach. In the German North Sea and Baltic Sea, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) provides a dense network of rescue ships, supported by seagoing helicopters. These require special equipment and training in order to safely evacuate patients. The construction of offshore wind farms has led to operational air rescue services, whose operations could contribute to improving maritime emergency medicine.
