Lecture series on the relationship between humans and animals 22.05.2025

Time
Location Zoom
Organizer Chair of Didactics and Educational Research/Studium fundamentale

Speaker Prof. Stephanie Krämer, from the University of Giessen, gives an insight into the dark side of the meat industry: “Of horses, pigs and humans - or what connects mare's blood with a pork chop”. The animal welfare expert reports on extensive research into so-called blood farms in South America and Iceland. There, the blood of pregnant horse mares is used to extract the hormone PMSG it contains. This in turn is used in Germany in the form of hormone preparations in piglet breeding. Some of the mares are in a poor nutritional state, as this increases the hormone level and therefore the profit.

In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on environmental awareness and interest in climate protection at universities. Even though this has resulted in very successful formats to date, the direct relationship between humans and animals has not yet been sufficiently addressed in university contexts. In an increasingly complex world, it also makes sense not to look at major challenges in isolation. The lecture series of the Chair of Didactics and Educational Research in Healthcare and the Junior Professorship for Digital Health therefore refers to the synthesis "human-animal relationship" and offers a far-reaching platform for a comprehensive discussion and examination of the diverse aspects of animal welfare, environmental awareness and ethics.

You can register online. Participation is free of charge.
