Originally from Belarus and based in Düsseldorf, media artist Oleg Yushko is concerned with man's self-image as mediated by science and technology. For several years, he has been working with augmented reality, for example for his project "Portable Museum", to place artworks in public space that can be discovered - sometimes obviously, sometimes hidden - via smartphone apps.

For his work "X3-Box", the artist immersed himself in the archives of the German Röntgen Museum and explored the history of X-ray technology. The resulting work playfully addresses the ambivalence between transparency and intransparency of the human body and the desire to see the invisible. The exhibition runs through December 22, 2023, and was previously on view at the Deutsches Röntgen-Museum. This semester, it will also be the subject of the Stufu seminar "Digital Art in Focus: Extended Reality, Creative Freedoms, and the Future of Art Production."

In addition, Oleg Yushko will start his artist-in-residence project at UW/H in November; it is titled "Open Studio - more than Close Study", aims to strengthen artistic presence at the university and to have an impact on university life, thinking and acting. The residency is openly conceived and gives participating artists the freedom to engage in exchange with the university community about the value and goals of science and knowledge. An exhibition resulting from this exchange will be implemented in the summer semester of 2024.
